Byrsa is the citadel hill that gave birth to Carthage. We chose the name deliberately.
Byrsa is the citadel hill that gave birth to Carthage. Long before the platforms and the protocols, this was a strategic high ground overlooking the Mediterranean - chosen by Phoenician settlers from Tyre around 814 BCE for the same reason any engineer would choose it: it commands the trade routes and the harbour.
Carthage grew into one of the great powers of the ancient Mediterranean - a maritime and commercial rival to Rome. Its empire, its navy, its engineering. The Punic wars would end the city, but the citadel hill remained.
The Romans rebuilt on the same hill. So did the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Ottomans, and modern Tunis. Each layer is still visible in the archaeological park that sits at the heart of the city today. Byrsa is the foundation on which Tunis is built.
We chose the name deliberately. Software is built in layers too. A platform earns its place the same way the citadel did - by being engineered to last, by being rooted in something older than the latest framework, by serving the people who depend on it.
